How to Answer the Top 5 Interview Questions
Vincent Benjamin

Interviewing can be the most difficult, and stressful, part of the job search process. You feel like you’re on display at the zoo with parades of people stopping by to gawk at you. But the interview is an important part of the process as it allows both you and the hiring company to learn more about one another. Preparing for the most challenging questions will help you ace the interview and land the job. Here are the top 5 toughest interview questions and how you can answer them.

  1. Tell me about yourself. This question sometimes feels like a trap. What do you say? The most important thing is to keep in mind that you don’t need to share your entire life story. Tell them about the aspects of your career that are most relevant to their business.
  2. What is your biggest weakness? How do you begin to admit that you have flaws? The key here is to avoid turning a strength into a weakness such as, “I am just so organized.” That will make you sound disingenuous. Instead, be honest about something that you have to overcome.
  3. Why should I hire you? The company wants to know what you can bring to the table that your competition cannot. So, tell them why you would be successful in their environment. Or why your specific skills can enhance the job they want done.
  4. Why did you leave your last job? Your motivations for doing things helps the potential employer decide if you’re a good cultural fit for their office. If you’re negative about your last job, supervisor, or coworkers, they may assume this attitude will carry over.
  5. Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years? This is where they want to hear your creativity. Don’t give a pat answer such as, “In management at your company.” That’s what everyone says. Instead, create a scenario where your skills will help you and this organization grow.
